Workday! Sediment survey with Jess 6.18.21

Date: Friday, June 18, 2021
Time: 10-5pm
Leader(s): Jess Riddle, GAFW Executive Director
Location: Cashes Valley Road, Gilmer County

Outing Description:
Fightingtown Creek springs out of the Mountain Roadless Area, and before emptying into the Ocoee River, grows into a large stream enjoyed by paddlers and tubers.  Along the way, it supports diverse aquatic life and flows through mature forest in Cashes Valley.  Unfortunately, Cashes Valley has become a destination for abusive vehicle use.  Erosion and sedimentation are especially concerning at the four road fords and adjacent streambanks.

To form a foundation for protecting the stream, we will gather data on where the road is polluting it with sediment.  This outing will provide training in how to collect data on sedimentation caused by roads and trails. A commitment to survey and submit data for one or more priority roads in addition to Cashes Valley by October is appreciated! See the Survey Manual for more details.  Of course, we’ll also talk about plants and other interesting natural features along the way.

Meeting Place Directions: Ingles in East Ellijay at the corner of the parking lot closest to Burger King. Coming from the south, take Highway 515 to Ellijay. You will pass a Walmart, and Ingles will be on the right at the next traffic light. The address is 100 Old Orchard Square, East Ellijay. We need to carpool with masks on and windows down to the road due to parking limitations. It will take about half an hour to carpool from Ellijay to Cashes Valley.
