Broad River Trail with Kathy and Sue 3.21.20

CANCELLED
Date: Saturday, March 21, 2020
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
Leader(s): Kathy Stege and Sue Harmon, Master Naturalist
Location: Broad River Trail
Outing Description: We’ll be taking in about ½ of the Broad River Trail on an in-and-out hike through the Middle Fork Broad River Mountain Treasure, one of the most pristine sections of the Piedmont in Georgia, and an area that was settled in the 1780’s. This trail traverses forests dominated by native oaks and shortleaf pine and occasionally a few loblolly pine plantations, which of course are not natural, but are quite common in the surrounding landscape, hence the importance of protecting this area. This Georgia Mountain Treasure harbors the southern range margin populations of typical mountain species like hemlock, Fraser magnolia, and white pines which spring from the north-facing slopes along the Middle Fork. We might see evidence of beavers along Dick’s Creek, paw paw, and likely more than a few spring ephemerals. Evidence of controlled burns in the area are possible as well.
