Outing Description:
Ramp Cove is the epitome of the numerous north-facing rich cove forests found along Kelly Ridge, one of “Georgia’s Mountain Treasures.” We should encounter a variety of the earliest of the spring ephemeral flowers (trout lilies, Hepatica, Dutchman’s britches, squirrel corn, spring beauties, toadshades, etc.) as we leisurely increase elevation into the heart of the cove with its massive yellow buckeyes and, of course, acres of ramps. Basically, this will be an all-day hike out and back as time will be allotted for discussion and discovery.
Meeting Place Directions:
Meet at 9:15 am at the Ingles Supermarket on Highway 76 in downtown Hiawassee, GA. Park near the Garden Center in the southwest corner of the parking area. Limited parking at the trailhead may require carpooling.
See meeting place on Google Maps
Distance and Difficulty:
The moderate-to-difficult hike will follow an unmaintained trail that may be muddy in stretches and rocky in others. There is one stretch where leaning rhododendrons will require a little flexibility. Overall, the hike is only 4.4 miles (round trip) with a steady grade gaining about 1000 feet of elevation. A creek is crossed to begin the hike.
What to Bring and Wear:
Lunch, plenty of water, rain gear, and sturdy footwear. If allergic to bees/wasps, remember to bring your meds/epi-pen.
Cancellation: If Outing is cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, we will notify you via email by 6:00 pm on the evening before.
