Location: Smith Gap Longleaf and Woodland Treatment Areas, Walker County, GA
Description:
The outing will be a driving tour of woodland and longleaf pine treatments in-progress on the Conasauga Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Walker County, GA. We will stop at a forest stand planned for timber harvest and restoration to montane longleaf pine, a stand planted in longleaf pine , and a woodland treatment area. District staff from the Conasauga Ranger District will be on hand to discuss treatments. Attendees will meet Forest Service personnel at the Villanow Forest Service Work Center and caravan to the Smith Gap area. The tour route will be on Forest Service and County unpaved roads that are accessible by two wheel drive vehicles, but higher clearance vehicles like SUVs would be preferred.
Meeting Place Directions:
Villanow Forest Service Work Center, 12411 GA-136, LaFayette, GA 30728. From Dalton, take GA 201 to GA 136. Turn left onto 136 and the work center is on the left. From Calhoun, take GA 136 for 17 miles and the work center is on the right.

Distance and Difficulty:
Low difficulty, short distance. We will be driving between stops. There will be opportunities to walk at the stops, but short distances.
What to Bring and Wear:
Weather appropriate clothing. We will not be walking far off the road on this tour. Water and snacks if needed.
Cancellation: If Outing is cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, we will notify you via email by 6:00 pm on the evening before.
