Making it possible: Roadside Geology of Georgia
Location:
Mt. Yonah

Description:
Mount Yonah is a monadnock (like Stone Mountain), relatively recently isolated from the Blue Ridge escarpment as erosion has gradually gnawed at that southern edge of the highlands. Erosion continues: boulders that probably broke off Yonah’s dramatic cliff face are strewn more than half a mile from it.

A relatively short but steep trail (2.2 miles each way) leads through a including glades and rock outcrops, oak-pine-hickory forests and a dramatic rock cliff face.  We will walk along the base of the rock face and also climb to the top via a side trail (non-technical, minor scrambling). Elevation gain is about 1,600 ft.

We are fortunate to be led by Dr. Bill Witherspoon, co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia.

Meeting Place Directions:
Mount Yonah Trailhead. From Cleveland, travel north on GA Hwy 75 approximately 2½ mi to Tom Bell Rd on the right. Once on Tom Bell Rd turn left onto Chambers Rd and follow it to the gravel road on the left marked “Yonah” to the trailhead. No fee is charged, and restrooms are available at the trailhead.

See meeting place on Google Maps
