Charlies Creek Road with Melanie and Eddi 3.23.21

Location: Charlies Creek Road, Towns County
Outing Description: The upper Tallulah River is one of the most scenic spots in Georgia, but one of the worst roads in north Georgia runs along its tributaries. We will visit Charlies Creek Road, which fords the Tallulah River and cuts a muddy path up to the Appalachian Trail at Blue Ridge Gap. We will have to ford the Tallulah to start the outing. We’ll examine the road’s erosion problems, talk about what led to the problems, and discuss what we can do to prevent it from doing further damage.
Meeting Place Directions: Intersection of Tallulah River Road and Persimmon Road. From Clayton, take 76W to Persimmon Road. Follow Persimmon Road to Tallulah River Road on left. There is a parking area at the entrance to Tallulah River Road.

Distance and Difficulty: Round trip about 5 miles with moderate difficulty.
What to Bring and Wear: Water shoes or hip waders. (River is below knee level at the crossing. Lunch, plenty of water, raincoat, hiking stick and sturdy shoes. Download the Avenza app and the Hightower Bald USGS topo quadrangle map.
Cancellation: If Outing is cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, we will notify you via email by 6:00 pm on the evening before.
