Outing Description: Documenting illegal motor-vehicle trails. We will visit an area of the forest that has a network of unauthorized motor-vehicle trails. Our goals will be to document parts of the network that have not been mapped yet. We will take photos of the damage and practice using the Avenza app to document the trails.

Meeting Place Directions: Cooper Gap (34.65296 -84.08468)

From Dahlonega, take US19 Business 2.2 miles. Turn left onto Camp Wasega Road and follow it 8.4 miles. Just after the barricades in the road and just before the Army Ranger Camp, turn right onto Cooper Gap Road (gravel) and follow it 2.8 miles to Cooper Gap.

From US76 in Blue Ridge, take GA60 south 0.5 miles. Turn left to stay on GA60 and follow 1.4 miles. Turn right to stay on GA60 and follow it 21.9 miles. Turn right onto Gaddistown Road (turns to gravel) and follow it 5.0 miles to Cooper Gap.

From the northeast, take GA180 to Suches. Turn left onto GA60 and follow it 0.5 miles. Turn right onto Cooper Gap Road (turns to gravel) and follow it 8.7 miles to Cooper Gap.

Distance and Difficulty:  Round trip will be 2 to 3 miles with moderate difficulty.

What to Bring and Wear: Lunch, plenty of water, raincoat, and sturdy shoes. Download the Avenza app and the Suches and Noontootla USGS topo quadrangle maps.
