Date: Thursday, September 25th, 2020
Time: 9 am – 1 pm
Leader(s): Clayton Webster
Location: Wells Viaduct at Locust Stake
Outing Description: Four mile loop hike on decommissioned OHV trail to 202′ tall Wells Viaduct across the North Fork of the Broad River. Great two tier waterfall with short off trail scramble. Beautiful hardwood forest near Toccoa. Come see how poorly designed and maintained OHV trails developed into giant gullies and caused damage to the North Fork of the Broad River before the Georgia ForestWatch and Southern Environmental Law Center got involved in this location. See the highest railroad viaduct between New Orleans and Washington, DC. It was built in 1917 and is truly amazing.
Meeting Place Directions: Antioch Baptist Church, 2175 Antioch Church Road, Mt Airy, GA 30563. We will meet at the church and drive to trailhead on a FS Road. We will not carpool from the church. Limit is 10 vehicles at trailhead.
See meeting place on Google Maps
Distance and Difficulty: Four mile loop hike on decommissioned OHV trail. Mostly easy walking with not much elevation gain/loss. More downhill going and more uphill on way out.
What to Bring and Wear: Suggest wear long pants for short off trail in two places. Have clean shoes for after the hike as trail is dirt. Bring lunch to eat at waterfall. Always carry rain gear, a first aid kit, and have a clean shirt for after the hike.
Cancellation: If hike is cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, we will notify you via email by 6:00 pm on the evening before hike.
Pet Policy: No pets this time please.
