Date: Friday October 9, 2020
Time: 9 am – 3 pm
Leader(s): Clayton Webster
Location: Three Forks Trail Warwoman WMA Rabun County East of Clayton, GA

Outing Description: This is a two part hike, both approximately three miles in length, and both three miles apart in the Warwoman WMA. Our first hike will be in one of Georgia’s Mountain Treasures as designated by the GAFW. We will hike from John Teague Gap on the Three Forks Trail down to the Holcomb Creek Narrows where the large stream narrows down to about two feet wide and in a 20 foot deep gorge with lots of 10-12 feet deep swirl holes. I have seen nothing similar to this in Georgia.
The second hike will be three miles away and visit 120′ tall Holcomb Creek Falls, Ammons Creek Falls, and “X” Falls on Holcomb Creek.

Meeting Place Directions: Ingles 176 Hwy 441 N Clayton, GA 30525. Meet in parking lot of Ingles in Clayton. As you face the store, meet on the far left side and back towards the highway. They have nice restrooms. We will caravan from this location to the Warwoman WMA.
See meeting place on Google Maps

Distance and Difficulty: It is a two part hike with two different three mile hikes. The first hike will be easier, but neither hike is extremely hard. We will be on trails with roots, rocks, several downed trees, and some rock hopper streams to cross. The second hike will have more elevation loss and gain to contend with. The payoff is some of the most beautiful places in North Georgia–The Holcomb Creek Narrows, Holcomb Creek Falls, Ammons Falls, and “X” Falls.
We will have a total of 20 miles of Forest Service Roads to drive on round trip, so you need to be comfortable with driving on this kind of road. It will also be 10 miles from our meeting place in Clayton.

What to Bring and Wear: HUNTING SEASON REQUIREMENT: Since there will be at least four different hunting seasons already open, Blaze Orange or Reflective Vests are required. Hiking poles are recommended for both trails. Bring rain gear, lunch to eat at Holcomb Creek Falls, your standard pack items of first aid kit, toilet paper, etc. Have clean clothes and shoes for after the hike and the ride home. Most likely there will be no cell service the entire day. Everyone must have a mask when we are close together for instructions or information along the way.

Cancellation: If hike is cancelled due to weather, we will notify you via email by 6:00 pm on the evening before hike.

Pet Policy: No pets this time, thanks.
