Date: Friday, August 7, 2020
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
Leader(s): Kathy Stege
Location: Broad River Trail
Outing Description: We’ll be taking in about ½ of the Broad River Trail on an in-and-out hike through the Middle Fork Broad River Mountain Treasure, one of the most pristine sections of the Piedmont in Georgia, and an area that was settled in the 1780’s. This trail traverses forests dominated by native oaks and shortleaf pine and occasionally a few loblolly pine plantations, which of course are not natural, but are quite common in the surrounding landscape, hence the importance of protecting this area. This Georgia Mountain Treasure harbors the southern range margin populations of typical mountain species like hemlock, Fraser magnolia, and white pines which spring from the north-facing slopes along the Middle Fork. We might see evidence of beavers along Dick’s Creek and paw paw trees. Evidence of controlled burns in the area are possible as well. We’ll largely be next to the Broad River, and will take time to wade and splash in the water as needed to cool off. Channel your inner child! We’ll talk at lunch about ForestWatch’s work on the trail, what Mountain Treasures are, and why this area is one.
Meeting Place Directions: Check Station on Guard Camp Rd – Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area
Use the Google map link below to determine the best route from your starting location. After meeting up at the check station we will caravan a 5-minute drive on a gravel road down to the trail head. The forest service roads we’ll be on are in good shape and a truck is not necessary
See meeting place on Google Maps
Distance and Difficulty: We’ll hike about 2 miles in, eat lunch, and then 2 miles back out. Leisurely pace. Typical ups and downs, roots and rocks along the trail.
